Margarita With A Straw (2015)
Cast: Kalki Koechlin, Revathi, Hussain Dalal and Sayani Gupta.
Director: Shonali Bose
Synopsis: A cerebral palsy affected female patient tries to live-up in her life, the struggles she faces, the happier she gets from her family and doctor. She wants to live like a normal person, marry a sweet guy and have a happy family. How she meets Hussain, who is also a patient of this disease? How she heals and live life from an average person perspective? The movie is all about finding happiness in everything, it does not matter where you are. Time will evolve.
Kalki plays the role of 19 years old teenager suffering from cerebral palsy, who wants to have a relationship with someone to make physical contacts. This is one of those movies which translate the story in the little melodrama possible.
Shonali Bose, the co-writer and director, presents the heart touching with that much dignity and grace that you will break in tears to help the characters shown in the movie. Laila (Kalki Koechlin) lives with her sweet little middle-class family, she does not let her conditions stop her to enjoy the life in the way she desires.
She spends the majority of time writing lyrics and music for her college band. And just like a normal college teen, student, she is eager to know more about intercourse and relationship with a boy. This made her mother very upset. Her life takes a strong turn, when the boy she loves, loves her. Then she begins a new journey accepting the scholarship, she got from New York University. There she meets a friend, who later becomes her lover. That is not a boy, she is a girl (Sayani Gupta), a Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin girl who is a blind.
Such films like this, created with a great credibility, are rarely seen in Hindi Cinema. This movie clearly, without hesitation, defines the soft themes of sexual desires of a disabled person. This is an idea for which filmmakers would have needed courage to watch. Laila, understanding her bisexual identity and telling parents about the same, this journey has shown in such a way that the people would love to see. In addition, this narration has been improved by great acting and dialogues.
Shonali Bose has not shown characters in an exaggerated manner as most Bollywood directors do. We are introduced to a normal personality. Laila is also selfish and just like girls of her age hurt someone, she also does the same thing often times. On the same side, she is a manipulative girl. The role performance given by Kalki brings humanity closer to Laila. It makes you feel the reflection of a disabled person’s life in real, as you are experiencing it.
I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
